Electricity and Gas Supply
Electricity and gas supply is one of the major business areas that support our country. It has been a field for which highly specialized practices have been established over the years. Since the full liberalization of the retail market, a large number of new entrants have emerged, and major business reforms have occurred. In particular, various institutional and regulatory reforms have been introduced in succession under policy objectives, such as the establishment of various energy markets, legal unbundling, a major review of the network system, promotion of wholesale transactions, tougher resilience, and carbon neutrality. In addition, various plans and businesses have been formulated and established, respectively, to meet diversifying customer needs.
We have lawyers who have served as legal deputy directors of the Electricity and Gas Market Surveillance Commission, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), who are working in energy-related companies and who have extensive and deep knowledge of the systems, practices, and governmental administration of the electricity and gas business, while keeping abreast of the latest policy discussions. We organize teams suitable for each case, which include these lawyers, and provide broad advice on (i) projects such as power plant and LNG plant projects, (ii) M&A and business alliances, (iii) start-ups of new retail business and new retail products design (e.g., renewable energy plans and PPA models), (iv) regulatory compliance (including market-related regulations), (v) complaints and dispute resolution, (vi) preparation and review of various contracts and general terms and conditions, and (vii) support for foreign projects.
