India is an attractive market and one of the fastest growing economies in the world: in recent years, it maintains over 6% economic growth per year; it is predicted to exceed $10 trillion GDP in 2020; more than 65% of its population is below the age of 35; and its middle class is rapidly growing with a high level of disposable income. Enthusiasm by Japanese companies to expand business into India seems to never fade. With significant liberalization of India’s foreign investment policy it is expected that Japanese companies will find more opportunities to do business in India and the overhauling of several key laws, including the bankruptcy and insolvency laws as well as arbitration law, should give further impetus to the ease of doing business in India.
We have been providing legal support to Japanese companies for their businesses in India by utilizing knowledge and know-how accumulated locally and through our established and growing network with prominent law firms in India. Some of our lawyers have been seconded to these local law firms and we also have an Indian qualified lawyer as part of our team.
We have been involved in advising on incorporation of wholly owned subsidiaries, establishment of joint venture businesses with local companies, technical cooperation, corporate mergers and acquisitions, advising on foreign exchange regulations and/ or merger control rules, financing matters including advising on issuance of bonds, dispute resolution including (international) arbitrations, the handling of labor law issues, and a wide range of general corporate advice related to the expansion or withdrawal by Japanese companies of their businesses in India. We also provide ongoing compliance advice to our Japanese clients for their existing businesses in India.
