Fundamental reform of Japan’s power system is underway. The radiation leaks from Fukushima after the devastating 2011 earthquake undermined the Japanese people’s confidence in the safety of nuclear power.
The consequent tight electricity market after the suspension of nuclear power plant operations to allow inspections exposed defects in the current system resulting in doubts as to whether the existing system could secure a supply of “cheap and reliable” electricity into the future.
